  16. For decades the author of fiction with a devoted cult following,
  17. Brodkey announced he had the illness in an essay for the New
  18. Yorker titled "To My Readers." Brodkey speculated that he contracted
  19. the disease as a result of "adventures in homosexuality" in
  20. the '60s and early '70s. "It's my turn to die," he wrote.
